Balsamic Honey Salad Dressing - A Bold, Sweet, and Tangy Staple Dressing

This honey balsamic vinaigrette is a staple in our kitchen, perfect for elevating everyday salads with its sweet and tangy flavors. We especially love using it to dress a spinach and arugula salad topped with strawberries and goat cheese. Making your own dressing may seem intimidating, but it offers a superior flavor and total control over every ingredient—a significant upgrade from store-bought versions.

Most traditional dressings follow a 3:1 oil-to-vinegar ratio, but this version uses a bolder 1:1 balance. The natural sweetness of the balsamic vinegar provides a smooth finish without being overly sharp. Best of all, this recipe is highly adaptable, allowing you to easily adjust the proportions to suit your personal taste.

    Ingredients and Notes

Ingredients for balsamic salad dressing. Bowl of balsamic vinegar, olive oil, Dijon mustard, salt, black pepper, apple cider vinegar, and honey.
    • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Olive oil contributes a smooth, rich flavor that coats the palate. It also helps to soften the intensity of the vinegar. For a more neutral taste, avocado oil makes an excellent alternative.
    • Vinegar: The combination of balsamic vinegar and apple cider vinegar provides a nice balance of tang and acidic flavor profile for this dressing.
    • Honey: Adds a touch of sweetness to this dressing, which complements its tangy flavors. If you prefer, maple syrup is a good substitute.
    • Dijon Mustard: Acts as an emulsifier, helping to combine the oil and vinegar for a smooth and creamy texture in the vinaigrette.
    • Seasoning: Don't forget a pinch of salt and freshly cracked black pepper; these simple additions significantly enhance the overall taste of the dressing.

    Expert Tips

Here are some tips for making a delicious balsamic honey salad dressing:

    • Use high-quality balsamic vinegar: The quality of your vinegar significantly impacts the final flavor. Look for a brand without added sugars or caramel coloring. Generally, aged balsamic vinegars offer greater depth and a natural sweetness that balances the dressing perfectly.
    • Select a premium olive oil: Extra virgin olive oil adds a beautiful depth of flavor and richness. If you prefer a milder profile, a neutral-tasting oil like avocado oil is an excellent substitute.

    Storage Instructions

Storage: For optimal freshness, store this homemade balsamic dressing in a tightly sealed, glass airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
