Indulge in the ultimate luxury appetizer, caviar and creme fraiche with crispy potato chips. The perfect party appetizer to serve at any gathering along with my goat cheese stuffed dates and bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers. - The combination of velvety creme fraiche and caviar is beyond delicious. The salty, briny combination of the potato chips and caviar adds depth of flavor, and paired with creamy crème fraîche becomes even more indulgent.
- This recipe is super easy and elegant! It doesn’t get easier than placing caviar, creme fraiche, and potato chips on a platter and serving with a pearled spoon.
- Perfect for holidays! Caviar is a luxurious treat often reserved for a special occasion. Pop open a bottle of champagne to serve with this alongside other impressive appetizers for Christmas, New Year's Eve, or even the Super Bowl.
Caviar Creme Fraiche With Potato Chip Ingredients
You’ll need the following ingredients to make these amazing caviar and potato chips:
Ingredient Notes
- Caviar: For this recipe, we used Premium American White Sturgeon Caviar. The fish eggs are glossy black with golden brown hues and are best known for their buttery creaminess and nutty flavor, with the briny tastes of the ocean. If you are looking for a higher-end caviar, I recommend the brand ROE. Roe caviar is one of the best caviar brands at a fairly reasonable price, thick texture, and rich taste.
- Creme Fraiche: A small dollop of crème fraiche is a classic caviar accompaniment. Crème fraîche, French for “fresh cream” is a thick cultured cream, with similar tart flavors to sour cream. To enhance this recipe's flavor further, try making my homemade Crème Fraîche Dip with fresh dill and a little squeeze of lemon juice.
- Potato Chips: We used Siete Sea Salt Kettle Potato Chips, but any bag of potato chips will work. You could even use truffled potato chips or barbeque chips for this simple snack.
- Garnish: Freshly minced chives are the perfect addition to the creme fraiche and potato chips. You could also use fresh dill, diced shallots, or red onion.

Substitutions & Variations
- Add minced shallots or red onion - For added crunch, garnish the top of the caviar with a small amount of shallots or red onion.
- Add smoked salmon: The salty, fishy flavor of smoked salmon with a dollop of caviar on top of velvety creme fraiche creates the perfect bite!
- Use flavored creme frachie - The smooth texture of my Lemon Dill Crème Fraîche Dip recipe compliments the caviar and potato chips.
- Use roasted fingerling potatoes - Instead of potato chips, you can use roasted fingerling potatoes.
Expert Tips
- Serve chilled. Store the caviar in the coldest area of your refrigerator. Most traditional ways of serving caviar are chilled, in a glass or porcelain bowl on a bed of crushed ice with a mother-of-pearl spoon to ensure that you taste the pureness of the caviar.
- Choose a high-quality caviar. Purchase caviar from a trusted source. Look for mid to high-priced brands without additives or coloring.
Storage Instructions
- Storage: To maintain peak freshness, store the unopened caviar in the coldest area of your refrigerator. Caviar and roe will remain fresh for 4 weeks.
FAQ
A spoonful of caviar is best enjoyed with champagne or vodka.
Caviar is an expensive luxurious treat. It is recommended one ounce per person if caviar is the main. For an appetizer, 1 ounce of caviar will serve 8-10 people.
Good quality black caviar should never be too salty or too fishy, it should be well-balanced and have a clean, fresh taste. Look for a high-quality producer and find one that best suits your palate.
Salmon Roe is salmon's unfertilized eggs, also known as ikura, salmon caviar, and red caviar. The main difference between salmon roe and caviar is that caviar is a specific type of fish roe that comes from sturgeon, and salmon rose is a type of roe that comes from salmon.
