During the cooler months, our family loves to make a big batch of chili along with my famous honey-sweetened cornbread. It’s food that warms both the body and soul, something the whole family will enjoy. This easy chili recipe can be made from start to finish in under an hour and is easily customizable to your liking.

Gluten-Free Sweet Potato Chili Ingredients

This gluten-free chili recipe is quick and easy to make, with simple ingredients you can feel good about serving your family. Packed with beef, beans, and loads of sweet potatoes in every bite! This chili has the perfect seasonings using my homemade chili seasoning blend.

  • Onion: This helps flavor the chili and provides texture.
  • Red Pepper: This brings both flavor and texture to the recipe.
  • Beef: I prefer to use grass-fed for both nutrients and its hearty flavor. For lower-fat options, ground turkey works best.
  • Black Beans: Canned black or pinto beans work well, just make sure to drain.
  • Sweet Potatoes: Garnet Sweet Potatoes are my favorite kind of sweet potato to use. They have a deep rich flavor.
  • Fire Roasted Tomatoes: This helps bring a little heat to the recipe.
  • Seasonings: This flavor combination below is the ultimate
  • Oil: Olive oil works well.
  • Chicken Broth: Choose a low sodium option for best results.

Gluten-Free Homemade Chili Seasoning Recipe

This gluten-free homemade chili seasoning mix is made with the perfect blend of spices including my secret ingredient, cinnamon! Most premade seasoning packets have some sort of anti-caking agents that can contain corn starch or wheat flour, but sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference. When choosing homemade spice mixes for your spice cabinet, make sure to buy organic brands that are certified gluten-free.

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder: A combination of blended chili peppers spices, both pungent and flavorful.
  • 2 teaspoons cumin: Rich and earthy, this spice balances the flavor profile of the chili.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder: Helps enhance the flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon paprika: In this recipe, I use regular paprika. Want more of a smoky flavor? Try Smoky Paprika for a kick.
  • 1 teaspoon salt: For flavor, adjust to your liking.
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon: This is my secret ingredient! Trust me you won’t want to skip this.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper: This brings both depth and spice.

How to Make Sweet Potato Chili

From start to finish, this large pot of chili can be made in under an hour on the stovetop. It’s our favorite recipe to make in the cooler months.

  1. Dice your red pepper and onion into small pieces. Add the vegetables to a large pot with oil and a splash of water. Sauté on medium heat for 5-10 minutes, until tender. Add the beef to the pot and cook until browned.
  2. While the beef is cooking, peel and dice your sweet potatoes into small cubes. Add the diced sweet potatoes to the large pot, along with the can of black beans (drained), chicken broth, and spices.
  3. Turn the burner to medium-high heat and bring the chili to a boil. Once the pot begins to boil, reduce the heat to medium/low. Cover with a lid and allow the chili to simmer for 25-30 minutes, or until sweet potatoes are soft.
